Lead-Free

Tabtronics offers lead-free pcb assembly (Pb-Free) and RoHS-compliant circuit board assemblies.  We’ve been manufacturing RoHS compliant circuit boards since 2006 and know how to successfully convert your Bill of Materials by suggesting alternative parts that are RoHS compliant.

What is RoHS?

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) is the directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (2002/95/EC).  The directive became law July 1, 2006 in Europe and has expanded to include China, Japan, and California.  Other states are considering it as well.

RoHS is often referred to as the lead-free directive, but it actually restricts the use of six hazardous

  1. Lead
  2. Mercury
  3. Cadmium
  4. Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+)
  5. Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
  6. Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)

The RoHS is closely linked with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) 2002/96/EC which sets collection, recycling and recovery targets for electrical goods and is part of a legislative initiative to solve the problem of huge amounts of toxic e-waste.The directive applies to the following types of equipment:

  • Large and small household appliances.
  • IT equipment.
  • Telecommunications equipment (although infrastructure equipment is exempt in some countries)
  • Consumer equipment.
  • Lighting equipment—including light bulbs.
  • Electronic and electrical tools.
  • Toys, leisure, and sports equipment.
  • Medical devices (currently exempt)
  • Monitoring and control instruments (currently exempt)
  • Automatic dispensers.
